Antique Roman Spatha 2nd century sword replica with can band scabbard
Possibly because of the barbarian or germanic influence, battle technique and sword shape evolved toward the end of the 2nd century AD. Blades became longer and swords were carried on the left side.  This Spatha is not a one-to-one replica of a historical model, but a reconstruction based on original finds from the 2nd century. These finds belong to the collection of the Limes Museum in Aalen, Baden Württemberg. The most striking feature of this scabbard is obviously the decorative, larger than average, round plate or disk at the bottom (also called can band).
The blade is made of steel. The hilt is made of handcarved bone. The wooden scabbard is covered in leather and riveted with authentic brass ornaments.
