Antique Roman Gladius 1th century sword replica with scabbard
The gladius, the standard weapon of the Roman legionnaires between the 3rd century B.C. and the 3rd century AD, was used in many different variants over the centuries. The Gladius type Pompeii (or Gladius Pompeianus), which replaced the Mainz type from the middle of the 1st century AD, represents the last stage of development of the Roman short sword the first four Gladii of this kind, which were dated before 79 AD (the year of the devastating eruption of the volcano Vesuvius, which buried the Italian city under a layer of ash several meters high).
The Roman one-handed sword comes with an ornately decorated wood/leather scabbard with brass fittings, based on archaeological finds from the collection of Museum Het Valkhof in Nijmegen (Netherlands). The locket, which is divided into two decorative fields on the obverse side, is decorated with partially tinned, partially pierced, partially engraved motifs. The chape consists of a V-shaped border with a locating button, a horizontal band and a decorative plate matching the locket. A palmette is attached above the chape.
The blade with straight, parallel cutting edges and a short, triangular point is forged from EN45 spring steel (neither hardened nor heat-treated). The cutting edges are not sharpened and the continuous blade tang is screwed to the end of the handle (brass nut).
